JOLIET – A psychologist has found a man accused of murdering his mother and dumping her body in the Des Plaines River is fit to stand trial.
Defense attorney Michael Renzi said Monday that Dr. Randi Zoot has turned in reports from her second evaluation of Shane G. Smith, 34. Zoot has determined Smith understands he faces criminal charges and can work with Renzi to prepare a defense.
The second evaluation was done after Smith reportedly had a "panic attack" and became ill in the courtroom when Renzi began discussing the case with him.
On Oct. 17, 2013, the body of Joan M. Smith was found in the river near Brandon Road. Another relative had reported the 59-year-old Joliet woman missing a few days earlier.
Shane Smith allegedly gave police inconsistent information after her death was discovered and was arrested on charges of murder and concealing a homicide.
