JOLIET – In the midst of its annual holiday celebration, the Rialto Square Theatre got a gift.
General manager Randy Green announced construction magnate Ed Czerkies has donated $350,000 to renovate the marquee of the 88-year-old theater.
The new marquee combines state-of-the art light-emitting diode screens under the theater name written in classic script. A sign under the marquee will read “In memory of Michael and Mary Czerkies” – Ed’s parents.
“I ask [all of] you to do what you can for this fabulous theater,” Czerkies said while noting the essential role it plays in drawing people downtown.
“Without the Rialto and the courthouse, we might as well close up the [down]town,” Czerkies said.
Czerkies donation also will pay to repaint the large vertical “Rialto” sign in front of the theater. Green said the new marquee is scheduled to be installed in spring.
