JOLIET – The University of St. Francis is proud to announce Gary Cheney of New Lenox, as the recipient of the 2015 Ss. Francis & Clare Award.
The Ss. Francis and Clare Award was created in 2003 to honor individuals whose lives exhibit the spirit of Ss. Francis and Clare and who model Franciscan values through their daily living and work.
Cheney founded ShareFest New Lenox, a month-long festival of service and sharing in God’s love dedicated to meet the needs within the community. Hundreds of volunteers spend time collecting food to fill pantries, put on job resource fairs, operate free exchange clothing and home goods drives and even collect items for troops overseas.
In 2012 the Village of New Lenox received a Governor’s Home Town Award for the great efforts and impact made by ShareFest 2011. Cheney has also assisted USF during its Day of Service event.
The SS. Francis & Clare Award is given at commencement to reinforce the Franciscan nature of the education graduates received and in recognition of the award’s value and prestige.
