Haley Augello wins U.S. Olympic Tream Trials

IOWA CITY, Iowa – Haley Augello, a 2013 Lockport graduate, won the 48 kg/105.5-pound title at last weekend’s U.S. Olympic Team Trials for senior women’s freestyle wrestlers.

Augello won two of three matches against Victoria Anthony, a two-time junior world champion, in the finals after beating a world bronze medalist in the semifinals. The Olympics qualifying process is ongoing as she competes again in Mongolia in two weeks and perhaps in Turkey in early May.


Joliet Central 22, Thornwood 0: Ryan King went 4 for 4 with a homer and five RBIs to lead Central (4-5) to the nonconference win. Ricky Malmfeldt was 3 for 3 with a double.

Lockport 5, Andrew 4: Joey McGuire singled to drive home Stephen Hill and Nick Strysik in the bottom of the seventh to complete the comeback after the host Porters trailed in the nonconference game, 4-1.

Gardner-South Wilmington 14, St. Anne 1: Matthew Wepprecht and Mike Wise each had three RBIs, while Braden Marks and Nate Seabert chipped in two for Gardner (2-3, 2-0) in the River Valley Conference win.

Oswego East 5, Plainfield South 2: South (8-2, 2-1) gave up four unearned runs in the second inning and dropped the Southwest Prairie game.

Oswego 4, Plainfield East 1: Eddie Marcotte had two hits for East (5-4, 1-1) in the Southwest Prairie loss.


Joliet Central 14, Thornwood 0: Ashley Hare went 3 for 4 with two triples, a double and five RBIs for Central (3-3). Hannah Gawenda went 2 for 2 with two doubles. Joanna Zepeda picked up the win and gave up two hits.

Lincoln-Way West 2, Lincoln-Way East 0: Mac Mahy scored on a Dani Callahan base hit and Amanda Ruskowsky had a double to lead West (4-1) to the nonconference win.

Coal City 17, Westmont 4: Abby Olsen went 3 for 4 with four RBIs led the Coalers (6-1, 1-0) by going 3 for 4 with a double, triple and four RBIs for Coal City (6-1, 1-0) in the Interstate Eight win. Blaire Harseim doubled, tripled and drove in three runs. Alivia Phelps went 3 for 3 and drove in two. Sydney Miller was 2 for two with two doubles, while Leslie Youskevtch had 2 hits. Youskevtch got the win with six strikeouts and one earned run. Alivia Phelps struck out six in relief.

Bishop McNamara 2, JCA 1: Jen Krizka drove in Reilly Jo Swanson for the JCA run. Meghan Harrison went 3 for 4 with a double.

Morris 2, Kaneland 0: Morris improved to 8-1, 1-0 with the Northern Illinois Big 12 East win.

Sandburg 7, Lincoln-Way Central 4: Central is 3-5.

Shepard 19, Lemont 1: Lemont is 1-2, 1-1 in the SouthSuburban Blue.

Streator 8, Wilmington 0: Lorri Kucharski had the only Wilmington hit.


Plainfield South 25-27, Lockport 18-25: For South in the nonconference victory, Donnie Doran had 13 digs; Logan Nash six kills, one block, one dig and 10 points; Nick Welter two kills and four blocks; Matt Friddle two kills, one block, six digs, six points and 18 assists; Brandon Langys eight digs, three kills and three blocks; and Rhome Apton five points, five kills, four blocks and digs.


Lemont 5, Plainfield South 0: Luke Pawlak and Jacob Gasienica won in singles for Lemont. Charles Balisalisa-Arjun Reddigari, Peter Rogers-Matas Maleiska and Charlie Cannon-Matt Retzke won in doubles.

JCA 5, Plainfield North 2: Jack Geissler and Alex Demos won in singles for JCA (2-0). Jordan Missig-Jared Hippman, Nick Ruff-Chris Sherman and Nathan Trogdon-Chris Mueller won in doubles. For North, Jacob Milo won in singles and Brandon Turner-Kevin Sitarz prevailed in doubles.


Illiana Christian 1, Reed-Custer 0: Gabi Perez made 18 saves for Reed-Custer.


Lewis takes second: Lewis gave its NCAA tournament hopes a boost by closing the 30-team Midwest Regional in second place with a 602 total at Purgatory Golf Club in Indiana. Andrew Grant tied for sixth with 146. Robert Dofflemyer III tied for 12th with 152. Alex Thode shot 153, tying for 21st. Ryan Ballard had 156 and Jack Korzon 159.
