Nicor, local fire departments kick off Natural Gas Safety Program

NAPERVILLE – With a focus on increased awareness about natural gas and general home safety, Nicor Gas is taking its natural gas safety program to fire stations in 55 communities across its northern Illinois service territory.

The program, now in its 11th year and held in conjunction with National Fire Prevention Week, will run through the end of October. The public will have the opportunity to learn important information that can help protect them and their families in the case of an emergency.

Nicor Gas volunteers will provide kid-friendly demonstrations and important tips and tools to ensure that families know what to do in the unlikely event of a natural gas emergency. Display tables featuring hands-on activities will engage children about natural gas, its origin, use and safety tips. Participants can learn about the Nicor Gas energy SMART program, as well as energy assistance programs.

The following is a schedule of upcoming Nicor Gas safety events in the Will-Grundy area:

• Noon to 3 p.m. Oct. 8 at Lemont Fire Protection District, 15900 New Ave. in Lemont.

• 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Oct. 8 at Coal City Fire Protection District, 1455 S. Berta Road in Coal City.

• 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Oct. 15 at Romeoville Fire Department, 698 N. Birch Lane in Romeoville.

Department of Veterans Affairs asks for nominations for awards

SPRINGFIELD – The Illinois Department of Veterans Affairs is asking for nominations for the Illinois Veterans’ Patriotic Volunteer Appreciation Award and the Illinois Veterans’ Business Appreciation Award.

A selection of veteran’s and businesses is chosen quarterly. From the quarterly winners, one is chosen for the Veteran and Business of the Year.

Award recipients are those whose efforts add to the powerful narrative that veterans are dedicated, lifelong servants whose efforts benefit Illinois’ veteran communities. The Business Appreciation award is designed to highlight and honor those businesses or organizations that go above and beyond the regular call of service to support our veterans.
