Police: Lockport man killed trying to cross train tracks

LOCKPORT – A 20-year-old Lockport man was killed Tuesday night after being struck by a train while trying to cross the tracks, police said.

The incident occurred about 7:50 p.m. as Jacob A. Hegeduis and a friend were walking to the crossing near Second and State streets in Lockport.

“His friend said they were walking back to town from Lemont when they saw the lights and heard the signal going off at the crossing, but thought they could beat it,” Lockport Deputy Police Chief Ron Huff said. “His friend made it, but when he turned back, Jacob was gone.”

Hegeduis appears to have been struck by Amtrak train 307. His friend called 911 and police found his body a short distance away, Huff said. Hegeduis was pronounced dead at the scene at 9 p.m. by the Will County Coroner’s Office.

The incident remained under investigation by Amtrak and CN Railroad police Wednesday.
