JOLIET – A 56-year-old man was fatally shot Friday night near McDonough and Ottawa streets.

Police Chief Brian Benton said witnesses heard shots about 10:15 p.m. and later found James D. Waddell laying in the nearby parkway.

“There was a large amount of blood on his clothing from an apparent gunshot wound to the chest area,” Benton said.

Waddell was taken to Presence Saint Joseph Medical Center where he was pronounced dead at 10:48 p.m., according to the Will County Coroner’s office. An autopsy was scheduled for Saturday.

Police also found blood on a vehicle that was left running in the 300 block of Ottawa Street, Benton said.

No suspect information was available Saturday.
