SHOREWOOD – “Believe it and achieve it,” was the message three-time Summer Olympics walking champion Debbi Sullivan wanted students at Troy Shorewood Elementary School to absorb.

Sullivan was a guest at the school at an assembly during its first Self-Esteem Week, held in February. She demonstrated to the students and teachers the proper way to do the Olympic walk, and the students then had walking races and walking relay races.

She set the world record in speed walking in 1993, walking the 1500-meter at 5:53:41. Sullivan also broke American walking records four times between 1992-1996.She was a member of the USA Olympic Team in 1992, 1996 and 2000, and was a member of the USA Pan American Games in Cuba in 1991.
