JOLIET – Speedway plans to build of a Route 53 gas station for cars and semitrailers in 2018.
The company has not decided what to do with the smaller, existing station nearby on the same highway, Chris Kalischefski told the Joliet Plan Commission last week.
Speedway plans a 6,000-square-foot building for a store and cafe at Emerald Drive.
Kalischefski, president of Corporate Design + Development Group, which is working on the project, said construction is expected to start in spring 2018 with the station opening that year.
He said the station will “have food offerings” but not a restaurant like may be found at a travel center.
Speedway will review the viability of the existing station on Route 53 once the new station is completed, Kalischefski said. If the new station is retained, it will likely be remodeled, he said.
The plan commission approved an annexation agreement for the four-acre site on the west side of Route 53.
