Joliet church shows its 'arty' side with fine arts exhibit and concert

Grace United Methodist Church celebrates its creativity

JOLIET – As a church music director, Nicholas Davis is a huge proponent of the arts.

“I think that, sadly, in education, the arts seem to be the first thing cut,” Davis said.

But art in any form also makes good outreach, Davis said.

That’s why Davis is coordinating Grace United Methodist Church’s first fine arts fair, which culminates in a concert Sunday.

About 15 artists also created displays of their art. The community may view this exhibit from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Friday.

“There’ll be painting, photography and quilts,” Davis said. “Some people brought in clothing they’ve knitted, and I think some people brought pottery.’ ”

Even the youth got involved and brought some of their projects, everything from artwork to dollhouses, Davis said.

“There was no specific guidelines,” Davis said. “Basically what I said was, ‘If you have artistic talent, we’d like you to participate.”

Then at 2 p.m. Sunday, a variety of choirs will perform. This includes the handbell choir, the chancel (adult) choir, The Blue Shirts (men’s choir) and the MACS (youth choir).

“Choir members picked their top favorite pieces,” Davis said, “and that’s what they’ll perform on Sunday.”

Davis feels art is a good way to connect the church community with the wider community.

“We’re just trying to let people know Grace is an inviting, welcoming place,” Davis said. “I think if people are searching for a church home, all I can say is Grace is a church that would welcome people with open arms.”
