ROMEOVILLE – A little more than a year ago, the Romeoville Art Society was created to bring local artists and like-minded individuals together to share their love of art, founder Heather Jelic said.
The society is all-inclusive, with gardeners, musicians, poets, embroiderers and traditional artists. As many as 13 members have applied, paying a volunteer fee of $25 a year.
"We want to bring in more art and celebrate art, and celebrate artists, and encourage and support others to take part in it," Jelic said.
The society held a May 25 gala and ribbon cutting, where members displayed their art. Some works were marked for sale.
The gala included poetry readings and a violin performance by a high school student. Anyone who had entered the Romeoville Art Society's monthly Poetry and Photo Contest was also featured.
The monthly Poetry and Photo Contest is open to the general public and adheres to a chosen theme. It runs August through April.
Goal: "Our mission is to enhance life in Romeoville and the surrounding communities by sharing our passions fro the arts in all its forms. Our purpose is to create a network of fellowship and a supportive environment to nurture not only our own unique and individual creativity, but that of the communities we live, work and serve within."
Why Make Art: "There are so many different forms of art, everyone really does take part in it. It's nourishing to the soul and brings people together. It enhances neighborhoods and communities when you bring art in and share it with others."
Advice for other artists: "Make more art. Don't stop, just make it. Find the time to make your art and share it with others."
