JOLIET – Since 1998, the Will County Earth Flag School Program has encouraged area schools to reduce, reuse and recycle, recognizing those that meet at least four of 13 criteria for eco-friendly operation.
This year, Joliet Montessori School was certified for meeting more than half of those 13 standards, including those for waste-free lunch, gardening, composting and recycling.
The school’s adolescent class – which had recycled old T-shirts into reusable shopping bags and sold them at their own farm stand – accepted the award on May 10 for the school.
Donna Martin, interim Head of School at JMS, said she couldn’t be prouder of all her students.
The award, along with many other recent and current student achievements and activities, is featured on the JMS Facebook page.
