Slammers hold first faith night

JOLIET – The Joliet Slammers are bringing baseball and Christian music together for its first faith night.

The Aug. 26 game between the Joliet Slammers and the Traverse City Beach Bums will kick off the night, with performances from The Center band at the start of the game and Joliet Christian rap artist Milton Calvin near the seventh-inning stretch.

The Center is a Christian youth ministry located in Joliet, according to its website at www.thecenteryouth.org.

Lauren Rhodes, Joliet Slammers account executive, helped jump-start this idea. Rhodes said that other minor league teams have had similar faith nights, so she wanted to try it and see where it would go.

“It’s mostly for the youth, to allow them to come to worship in a place where they can express themselves,” Rhodes said.

After the game, The Center band will hold a worship concert, followed by a performance by Milton Calvin.

The Center is working on sponsorships to make park entry free that night, Rhodes said.

For Calvin, this performance at Slammers Stadium will be special.

“I’m definitely looking forward to faith night. Performing at the stadium has been a goal of mine for years, and to finally get this opportunity really means a lot to me,” Calvin said.
