Report: Luke Yaklich joining Beilein's staff at Michigan

The Detroit Free Press is reporting that former Joliet Township and Joliet West basketball coach Luke Yaklich is joining University of Michigan coach John Beilein's staff.

Yaklich and DeAndre Haynes were set to coach together at Illinois State this season. Yaklich was the Redbirds' associate head coach last season, and Haynes was hired in May to join the ISU staff.

The pair will be together, but it will be at Michigan instead of at ISU. The Free Press on Saturday night cited reports from The Athletic's Brendan Quinn and The Michigan Insideer's Josh Henschke that Yaklich will join Haynes, whose hiring was reported in the last week, on Beilein's staff. They are the replacements for Billy Donlon, who left for Northwestern, and Jeff Meyer, who joined former Michigan assistant Lavall Jordan’s staff at Butler.

Yaklich exited Joliet West for ISU in 2013 after spending 14 years as a high school teacher and coach. As the head coach at Joliet Township and Joliet West, his teams were 104-62 in seven seasons before he left Joliet to join his former college teammate Dan Muller’s staff at Illinois State. West reached the supersectional in 2010 and the sectional in 2012 under Yaklich's guidance.

Yaklich, who also has coached the Joliet Pride and Illinois Wolves AAU teams, was promoted to associate head coach last season and helped lead the Redbirds to a school-record 28 wins. Illinois State had one of the nation’s best defenses last year, thanks in part of Yaklich's influence.
