JOLIET – An 80-year-old man who jumped off the Cass Street bridge into the Des Plaines River early Friday has died, the Will County coroner said.
An autopsy performed Saturday revealed the preliminary cause of death was drowning. Next of kin had yet to be notified of the man’s death as of Saturday afternoon, so his name was withheld.
About 7 a.m. Friday, Joliet firefighters responded to a report of a man who jumped off the bridge. Joliet Battalion Fire Chief Ron Schroeder said that when firefighters arrived minutes later, police officers already had pulled the man
from the water.
Schroeder said police officers happened to be in Bicentennial Park on Friday morning when they saw the man jump and splash into the water. The police immediately responded and were assisted by people on a boat who were docked in the area for Saturday’s River Fest, Schroeder said.
After he was pulled from the water, the man was in critical condition and taken to Presence Saint Joseph Medical Center, Schroeder said.
Calls to Joliet Police Deputy Chief Ed Gregory were not returned Friday. When asked about the condition of the man, Presence Health spokesman Chris Zurales deferred to the police.
