JOLIET – Police arrested a 14-year-old boy after allegedly finding him sleeping with a stolen semi-automatic handgun Thursday morning, authorities said.
Shortly after 7 a.m., officers served an arrest warrant on the teenager at a residence in the 1000 block of Woodruff Road. The warrant charged the teen with contempt of court, said Joliet Deputy Police Chief Ed Gregory.
Gregory said while the officers were at the residence, they noticed the teen was sleeping on a sofa and allegedly found a loaded semi-automatic handgun under his body. The officers also allegedly found a loaded magazine, Gregory said.
The officers arrested the teen and learned the handgun had been stolen in a burglary that occurred on Oct. 3 in the 1200 block of Luther Avenue, Gregory said.
The teen was charged with unlawful possession of a firearm, unlawful possession of ammunition, possessing a stolen firearm and possessing a firearm without an owner’s identification card.
The teen was taken to River Valley Juvenile Detention Center.
