Lincoln-Way Central running back Mike Morgan received 927 of the 2,010 votes cast (46.12 percent) in the Herald-News online poll for our top performer of the week in football. Joliet West defensive back Tyler Barnette was second with 479 votes (23.83 percent).

Sports editor Dick Goss talked with Morgan, the second Lincoln-Way Central running back to receive the weekly award as Justin Ellis was a previous winner. Morgan rushed 26 times for 149 yards and sealed the Knights' 19-7 victory at Waubonsie Valley with a 30-yard touchdown run, his second TD of the game.

Goss: Were you surprised at winning the award?

Morgan: At first I thought it was a surprise, but then I heard that everyone started voting for me. It's really cool.

Goss: What was special about the Waubonsie game?

Morgan: We played in the mud, which I enjoyed. I rushed for more than 100 yards and scored two touchdowns. It probably was the most fun game that I've played in.

Goss: What about the loss you guys had against Lincoln-Way East?

Morgan: We knew going in it would be a tough game. We were ready and started strong. They came back and won, and we have kind of adjusted from there. It definitely was a good learning experience.

Goss: This is the second season after Lincoln-Way North closed. What was your experience with the guys transferring in from Lincoln-Way East?

Morgan: I felt I should help bring the new guys in and make them feel welcome. I did, and now I'm really close with a lot of the Mokena kids who came over besides some of the guys who were already here.

Goss: How has bringing in the transfers worked out in general?

Morgan: Better than I thought it would. Coach [Jeremy] Cordell has done a good job bringing us together.

Goss: Any game-day superstitions?

Morgan: I wear the same lucky shirt that I've worn since second grade. It's a Nike cutoff undershirt that stretches with me.

Goss: You had siblings who were athletes?

Morgan: Two older twin brothers who are juniors in college, Ryan and Jake. They played football and baseball in high school.

Goss: Do you plan to play college football?

Morgan: Yes, I want to. So far my only offer is from Drake.

Goss: What is your GPA? Do you have a favorite subject?

Morgan: I have a 3.5 GPA. I favor any type of history class.

Goss: What would you like to do in college and beyond?

Morgan: I'm not sure, but I've been thinking about all types of engineering.

Goss: Favorite restaurant?

Morgan: I like Jersey Mike's and Portillo's. BWW [Buffalo Wild Wings], too.

Goss: What do you enjoy doing in your free time?

Morgan: Hanging out with friends. If it gets too late to do that, I'll play a video game like Madden on Xbox.
