JOLIET – The manager of a Spirit Halloween store in Joliet allegedly stole $1,500 from the shop through fraudulent refunds, police said.

From Oct. 1 through Saturday, Kayla N. Skurkis, 20, of Joliet, allegedly made multiple return transactions at the store on 3150 Tonti Drive, said Joliet Deputy Police Chief Ed Gregory. The total transactions amounted to about $1,500, Gregory said.

Spirit Halloween is located at the former hhgregg location near the Louis Joliet Mall. It opens in late August and runs through November, selling costumes, decorative items, animatronics, accessories and collectibles, according to the Spirit Halloween website.

Skurkis, who lives on Albert Avenue, according to Will County court records, allegedly stole the money by refunding hundreds of dollars on separate days onto a debit card, Gregory said. She was caught by a retail loss prevention manager, he said. Skurkis was arrested and charged with theft at the store. She booked into Will County jail on Monday.

Skurkis appeared in court Tuesday afternoon and was released from custody following her hearing.
