Car shop eyes Jefferson Street spot

The Joliet zoning board next month will consider plans to convert this empty auto parts store on Jefferson Street to a car customizing and accessory shop.
The Joliet zoning board next month will consider plans to convert this empty auto parts store on Jefferson Street to a car customizing and accessory shop.

JOLIET – A closed auto parts store on Jefferson Street is slated to be filled by a car accessory and custom shop.

The custom car shop also is seeking a permit to sell used cars on a limited basis at the former Carquest Auto Parts at 2409 W. Jefferson St.

The Joliet Zoning Board of Appeals will consider special use permits for the new business at its Dec. 21 meeting.

"They will have a used-car license so they can put a car or two for sale," said Michael Schwarz, director of planning for Joliet.

The main business, however, will be customizing cars and selling accessories, Schwarz said.

Special use permits are needed for auto businesses.

Schwarz said the business would be operated by local owners.
