Joliet university supports Catholic Climate Covenant

JOLIET – The University of St. Francis joined 161 leaders in the U.S. Catholic community on behalf of the Catholic Climate Covenant in delivering a letter to President Donald Trump and Congress.

The letter asks them to support a global effort to address climate change by supporting the Senate’s request to provide $10 million to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change and the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change; participate meaningfully in the deliberations of the UNFCCC; and honor our nation’s commitment to the Green Climate Fund.

By adding his signature to this letter, USF President Arvid C. Johnson joined leaders from other Catholic colleges and universities, national organizations, religious congregations and health care providers in affirming the church’s long-standing commitment to care for creation and our poor and vulnerable neighbors; it also reiterates the U.S. bishop’s call to act upon the proven science of climate change and its effects.

This is the second letter created by the Catholic Climate Covenant that USF has supported. In February 2017, USF announced its support of the Clean Power Plan, which called for a significant decrease in carbon pollution from existing power plants.

The Catholic Climate Covenant was established in 2006 by the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops in order to address growing ecological awareness and inspire and equip people and institutions to care for both creation and the poor. The covenant’s goal is to help U.S. Catholics respond to the church’s call to care for creation and the poor.
