Joliet Junior College will host winter jazz concert Dec. 1

JOLIET – The Joliet Junior College Fine Arts Department will present its annual fall semester Jazz Concert at 7:30 p.m. Dec.1 in the Fine Arts Theatre on the main campus at 1215 Houbolt Road, Joliet.  

The concert will feature the college’s jazz band under the direction of Rich Moore. The guest band is the Plainfield Central High School jazz band under the direction of Dan Valkema. The Joliet Junior College Combo will provide pre-concert entertainment in the Fine Arts Theatre lobby at 7 p.m.

The JJC Jazz Band will perform “Early Autumn” by Ralph Burns and Woody Herman, “Full Nelson” by Oliver Nelson, “Big Dipper” by Thad Jones, “Yearnin'” by Oliver Nelson, “Dizzyland” by Don Menza, “Àgua de Beber” by Antonio Carlos Jobim, “Opus One” arranged by Sammy Nestico, “I Hear a Rhapsody” arranged by Bob Mintzer, and “Sidewinder” by Lee Morgan, arranged by Mark Taylor.

Student soloists will include Christian Bierma (New Lenox) and David Patush (Plainfield) on alto saxophone; Nancy Lehman (Joliet) and Dean Scoigletti (Plainfield) on tenor saxophone; Adrian Leija (Joliet), Ron Magiera (New Lenox) and Dave Griesemer (Frankfort) on trumpet; Dana Goodman (Romeoville), James Stegall (Joliet), Brandon Bulthuis (Mokena), and Michael Kovach (Joliet); Melvin Holmes (Bolingbrook) on guitar, and Janice Murphy (Orland Park) on piano.

Featured guest artist Luke Malewicz will join the band on trombone.

Admission is $5 for adults; $4 for senior citizens, non-JJC students, JJC faculty and staff; and $2 for JJC students.

The JJC Jazz Band is a community jazz band and participation is open to all residents of District 525 that play a typical jazz band instrument. The group meets on Wednesday evenings from 7:00 to 9:45 p.m. each semester. The class may be taken for credit or non-credit.
