MANHATTAN – The eight annual Candy Buy Back sponsored by Manhattan Dental Care was a success with a total of 1,061 pounds of candy collected.
For every pound of candy donated, Dr. Laura Aversano, owner of Manhattan Dental Care pays $1. The candy is then donated to Operation Care Package.
Along with the candy, Manhattan Dental Care also donates 1,000 toothbrushes and toothpastes. Operation Care Package supports military troops with care package mailing year-round. Approaching the holidays, it does extensive mailing of care packages.
The Manhattan Boy Scouts Pack 155 donated 217 pounds of candy and it bought Thanksgiving dinners for local families.
The Manhattan Jr. High Blue Crew donated 124 pounds of candy, and the proceeds will be used to buy wreaths for Abraham Lincoln National Cemetery.
St. Joseph Catholic School PT Joes (parent organization) collected 46 pounds, and it is donating the money to Operation Care Package to defray postage costs to ship the candy.
Another big candy donor were the customers of Martinizing Green Dry Cleaning in Mokena who donated 122 pounds. Operation Care Package helped transport the candy to their packing facility.
Everyone who donated was entered into a drawing for a $50 gift card and the lucky winners this year are Mark and Ben Proff.
