Letter: Responding to a letter

To the Editor:

In response to Vincent Duarte Jr.’s letter.

“Every person in America has done or said something that would keep him or her from being president. Maybe a nation that consumes as much booze and dope as we do and has our kind of divorce statistics should pipe down about ‘character issues.’”

Was journalist P.J. O’Rourke wrong in his analysis?

I’d be the first to back Mr. Duarte Jr.’s right to speak his mind, but we can too often be waylaid by our state of human imperfection, emotions and our silly ole’ pride.

It’s nice to get our way, but, when you think about past history, haven’t we shot four of our presidents, impeached one and hounded one out of office?

So, what do we do again every four years? Hold an election and assassinate their character. If we don’t like the results, we forget the facts, just enough to allow political persuasion to haunt us into an emotional tizzy.

The way I see it (my opinion, of course), we Americans do a pretty good job of dividing this nation and screwing up on our own. Some of us can’t seem to accept the reality of political change. We keep voting in the same people and expect a different result.

Years ago, my Dad told me never to believe all of what I read or hear. His exact words were: “Prove it, kid... Prove it.” And I will.

Since the proof of the pudding is in the eating, I shall sort out facts and wait on time, to know if the president is dividing America, doing a lousy job, or if there is any real criminality that he should resign.
