SHOREWOOD — A semitruck driver was hospitalized after his truck rolled over late Thursday night on Interstate 80 near Shorewood and the Interstate 55 interchange.
The male truck driver was heading east on I-80, hauling animal food and other supplies, when he crashed into an abandoned car on the right side of the road. He suffered minor injuries and was treated and released from Presence St. Joseph Medical Center in Joliet.
“The truck was mangled,” police said.
The crash scene was not completely cleared until 3 p.m. Friday. Traffic only was blocked in one lane, but there still were backups.
State Trooper DeAnn Falat said that she still did not have information about citations nor identifying information late Friday afternoon.
Troy firefighters responded just before 11:45 p.m. Thursday to I-80 eastbound near River Road for a two-vehicle collision with "severe damage," Fire Chief Andy Doyle said.
A semitruck had traveled into the guardrail and rolled over after hitting an unoccupied vehicle.
"[The other vehicle] must've been broken down," Doyle said.
It took about 30 minutes to extricate the driver from the truck.
A medical helicopter initially was requested but was later called off.
