JOLIET – Organizers of the MLK Day of Service have added a food pantry to the Jan. 15 event.
People interested in volunteering still can sign up for the event that will start at Joliet Central High School.
Organizers announced Friday that the event will include the Northern Illinois Food Bank’s Mobile Pantry sponsored by Caterpillar Inc.
Volunteers will distribute food at Joliet Central, 201 E. Jefferson St., from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. to people in need on a first-come, first-served basis while supplies last.
Organizers have set a goal of signing up 1,000 volunteers and 50 projects for the event held annually on Martin Luther King Jr. Day, when people donate time to provide services requested by local nonprofit agencies and schools.
The day begins with volunteer registration at 7:30 a.m. at Joliet Central, followed by a program launch and breakfast.
Volunteers then head out for various projects from 9 a.m. to noon. They return to Joliet Central for a 1 p.m. lunch and a recap of the day.
Anyone interest in volunteering can contact Ericka Williams at email@example.com, or call 815-724-1142.
Organizers are seeking more projects. Nonprofit organizations should submit requests by Wednesday to the United Way of Will County at firstname.lastname@example.org.
Volunteer sign-up forms and project request forms are available at www.jths.org.
Sponsors for the local MLK Day of Service are NAACP Joliet Branch, Babe’s Hot Dogs, The Great American Bagel, E-Z Auto Sales, United Way, Catholic Charities and the Community Services Council of Will County.
