2 injured in 5-vehicle Joliet evening rush hour crash

1 driver fled scene, police and fire officials say

JOLIET – Joliet police are investigating a crash where the driver of a Nissan Murano slammed into several vehicles Wednesday afternoon, causing a five-car collision that left one driver hospitalized in life-threatening condition, authorities said.

Joliet Deputy Police Chief Ed Gregory said Thursday that police have one suspect who may have been involved in the massive crash that took place at the intersection of Larkin Avenue and Black Road, but they are still investigating.

At about 4:30 p.m. Wednesday, the driver of the Murano blew a red light while driving in the wrong lane at the intersection and slammed into a white Toyota Avalon driven by a 56-year-old man, Gregory said.

That driver was later taken to Presence Saint Joseph Medical Center where he was treated for multiple injuries, including bleeding on the brain, he said.

The driver was found unconscious by first responders. The Murano continued kept going and struck a black Dodge Nitro driven by a 31-year-old woman. The Nitro spun completely around and clipped a Lincoln driven by a 42-year-old woman.

Gregory said the driver of the Nitro was hospitalized with a leg injury. The driver of the Lincoln was not injured.

The Murano went on to hit a Jeep Wrangler driven by a 16-year-old girl. The teen refused medical attention, but her parents took her to the hospital, Gregory said. He said the Murano driver fled the scene.

The intersection at Larkin Avenue and Black Road was closed following the crash and re-opened some time between 10:30 and 11 p.m., Gregory said.
