CHANNAHON – An Interstate 55 bridge was shut down for emergency deck repairs Monday for the third time since mid-November.
The southbound right lane was closed when a 4-by-4 foot hole developed in the deck of the bridge over the BNSF railroad and Grant Creek near Channahon, according to the Illinois Department of Transportation.
The lane and shoulder were expected to reopen by Tuesday morning.
The hole developed in a different section of the deck than the other problems that developed in November, IDOT spokeswoman Gianna Urgo said.
Urgo said IDOT does plan to replace the bridge decks but is reviewing the scope of the work and lining up funding for the project.
The lane was closed for 3 miles south of Arsenal Road.
