Wrestling: Area athletes seek state trips at 3A Alton Sectional

More than 80 local wrestlers in this weekend’s Class 3A sectionals will try to reach their ultimate goal of advancing to the IHSA finals in Champaign.

To do so they will need a top-four finish in their respective weight class.

The vast majority will be heading to the St. Louis area for the Alton Sectional, which runs Friday and Saturday. Bolingbrook has three individuals in the Hinsdale Central Sectional.

Minooka leads the way with 12 qualifiers followed by Lockport (10), Lincoln-Way West (9), Providence Catholic (9), Lincoln-Way East (8), Plainfield South (7) and Plainfield Central (5).

The 220-pound weight class is definitely the gem of the Alton Sectional with the top-five ranked individuals in the state competing for four qualifying spots.

Here is a look at the Alton Sectional by weight class, with the latest Illinois Wrestling Coaches and Officials Association rankings included.

106: Marian Catholic’s Anthony Talamonti (No. 4, 29-1) is the favorite in the top bracket, while Lockport’s Mike Kaminski (No. 7, 26-9) is favored on the other side. Plainfield North’s Dylan Amico (32-4) hopes to challenge Talamonti. Minooka’s Jack McClimon (28-13) and Providence’s Nick Matthias (25-17) have a first-round matchup in the bottom bracket.

113: There’s an interesting potential semifinal clash between Edwardsville’s Noah Surtin (No. 2, 43-1) and Lockport’s Matt Ramos (No. 3, 40-4). Providence’s Jake Lindsey (9-1), a defending state champ, could see Plainfield Central’s Nick Minnito (30-9) in the quarterfinals and Plainfield South’s Enzo Silva (No. 6, 38-6) in the semifinals on the bracket’s other side.

120: Marian Catholic’s Travis Ford-Melton (No. 2, 25-1) is the one to beat here, and Plainfield East’s Anthony Zamora (31-6) hopes to meet him in the quarterfinals. On the other side of the bracket, Lockport’s Anthony Molton (No. 4, 40-6) could run into Minooka’s Austin Markee (34-8) or Lincoln-Way West’s Garrett Geigner (29-13) in the semifinals.

126: Edwardsville’s Luke Odom (No. 4, 43-1) is favored in the bottom bracket and will face Lincoln-Way West’s Payton Geigner (32-10) or Plainfield South’s Andrew Cervantes (30-10) in the quarterfinals. Marian Catholic’s Carlos Champagne (No. 5, 37-1) is favored up top. Minooka’s Zach McDowell (30-11) and Joliet West’s Eric Davis-Smith (28-9) are in the mix.

132: Marian Catholic’s Reece Heller (No. 4, 33-3) is favored in the top bracket, which also features Joliet Central’s Mario Leon (20-7) and Minooka’s Dominic Ruettiger (21-10). Collinsvile’s Patrick Grzywacz (No. 8, 34-4) and Rock Island’s Victor Guzman (No. 9, 28-5) get the nod on the other side, which includes a first-round matchup between Lincoln-Way West’s Nate Dluzak (23-14) and Joliet West’s Terrance Snapp (20-11).

138: Providence’s Dominick Ambrose (No. 9, 32-9) meets Plainfield Central’s Jacob Bogdan (30-10) in the first round with the winner to face Minooka’s Adam McDowell (25-9) in the quarterfinals. On the other side of the bracket, Lockport’s James Pierandozzi (No. 10, 8-0) is expected to face Marian Catholic’s Holden Heller (No. 6, 11-0) in the semifinals.

145: Lockport’s Baylor Fernandes (No. 3, 35-5) and Oswego’s Gannon Hughes (No. 5, 39-2) figure to clash in the bottom semifinal, while Providence’s Josh Ramos (37-5), Yorkville’s Joe Roberts (No. 10, 37-7) and Minooka’s Noah Boles (21-7) are in the other bracket.

152: Plainfield South’s Jake Kendall (40-8), Lockport’s Zach Reese (No. 10, 27-10) Lincoln-Way West’s Brock Pfeifer (29-15) and Lincoln-Way East’s Gus Christensen (24-14) are in the mix in the bottom bracket. Providence’s Kevin Countryman (29-11), Moline’s Jayden Terronez (No. 6, 36-6), Joliet West’s Jeremy Pullen (30-7) and Minooka’s Jake Ryan (25-11) hope to battle for spots on the other side.

160: Providence’s Cole Smith (No. 2, 37-2), who was a state runner-up a year ago, is the favorite and likely will meet Plainfield South’s Erik Santiago (17-6) in the quarterfinals. Oswego’s Allen Swanson (No. 3, 38-3) is favored in the bottom bracket, which also features Lincoln-Way East’s Noah Alsguson (29-11), Plainfield Central’s Jamel Sheppard (9-1) and Lincoln-Way West’s Jacob Cronk (29-14).

170: O’Fallon’s Jack Bond (No. 4, 38-3) is the favorite in the bottom bracket over Neuqua’s Jacob Boumans (37-6), Minooka’s Alec Dufour (27-13), Lincoln-Way East’s Chris Wilder (27-11) and Plainfield South’s Dan Caldwell (31-16). On the opposite side, Joliet West’s Jonathan Pullen (No. 8, 38-3) and Lincoln-Way West’s Kyle Quinn (No. 10, 32-9) are favored.

182: Two to watch in the upper bracket are Lincoln-Way East’s Nick Mihajlovich (No. 5, 27-3) and Lockport’s Yousif Salah (13-7). On the other side, Yorkville’s Nick Stemmet (No. 2, 34-4) is the favorite and Homewood-Flossmoor’s Tommy Dantzler (26-4), Oswego East’s Jackson O’Reilly (22-4) and Granite City’s Reide Wilson (26-8) are in the mix.

195: Moline’s Hunter Henning (No. 10, 32-7) is favored in the top bracket over Lincoln-Way East’s John Christensen (26-10) and Plainfield Central’s Josh Mackenzie (32-8). On the other side, Plainfield North’s Devontae Davis (26-5), Lincoln-Way West’s Jordan Telez (22-13), Minooka’s Drew Gutknecht (21-5) and Yorkville’s Ben Stemmet (31-10) are factors.

220: Plainfield North’s Matt Hennessey (No. 1, 37-0) could meet Lincoln-Way East’s Jaden Hacha (15-5) in one quarterfinal, and Yorkville’s Brady Fisher (No. 3, 39-3) should see Lincoln-Way West’s Jimmie Olds (No. 5, 34-5) in the other quarterfinal in the bottom bracket. Up top, Providence’s Logan Anderson (No. 2, 26-4) could face Plainfield Central’s Tom Gustafson (14-3) in one quarterfinal, and Minooka’s Connor Briley (No. 4, 28-7) and Romeoville’s Andres Jara (13-7) square off in a first-round match.

285: Lincoln-Way East’s Devin O’Rourke (No. 3, 23-2) and H-F’s Jeff Griffin (No. 4, 35-1) look like they’re headed for another showdown for a tournament title. Joining Griffin in the top bracket are Minooka’s Derek Wentworth (21-7) and Plainfield East’s Artese Gregory (30-5), while Yorkville’s Keenan Ness (No. 8, 33-10), Lincoln-Way West’s Nick Skentzos (31-13) and O’Fallon’s Mason Baker (31-7) will join O’Rourke on the other side of the bracket.
