JOLIET – A 47-year-old Joliet man was killed after two cars hit him Wednesday night near a Joliet intersection.

Mariano H. Velasco, 47, of Joliet was crossing eastbound Collins Street, just north of East Cass Street, about 6:25 p.m. Wednesday when a 23-year-old Bolingbrook man driving a 2007 GMC Envoy north on Collins Street hit him, according to a news release from the Joliet Police Department.

The Bolingbrook man had been driving in the outside lane.

Velasco was knocked to the ground. A 29-year-old Joliet man driving a 2001 Honda Odyssey north on Collins Street in the inside lane then dragged Velasco about 20 feet, the release stated.

Velasco suffered major life-threatening injuries in the incident. Joliet firefighters and paramedics performed a rapid transport to Presence Saint Joseph Medical Center in Joliet, but Velasco died in the emergency room at 7:20 p.m., according to a news release from the Will County Coroner’s Office.

No one involved in the incident was intoxicated, police said, and Velasco was wearing black clothing.

“[He] was not clearly visible to the other units involved,” the police department’s release stated.

The manner and cause of Velasco’s death will be determined after the completion of autopsy, toxicological and police reports, according to the release.

Velasco’s funeral home selection was pending Thursday morning.
