Police: Joliet woman crashes into van carrying prison officers

A Joliet woman was cited after allegedly crashing into an Illinois Department of Corrections van carrying seven officers to a prison in Dixon, officials said.

At 7:40 a.m. Thursday, Maya A. Smith, 19, of the 800 block of Black Road in Joliet reportedly was traveling near Route 52 and Ridge Road north of Minooka when she crashed into a Department of Corrections van, said Kendall County Deputy Nancy Velez.

Smith, who was behind the wheel of a 2017 Jeep Patriot, allegedly drove through an intersection and sideswiped the van carrying the officers.

The officers were transported to Presence Saint Joseph Medical Center in Joliet for a medical evaluation, Velez said.

The IDOC staff in the van were correctional treatment officers from the Joliet Treatment Center and were on their way to the Dixon Correction Center for training, Department of Corrections spokeswoman Lindsey Hess said in an email.

No prisoners were on board the van, Hess said.

Smith was issued a citation charging her with failure to stop at an intersection and failure to reduce speed. Smith reportedly refused medical treatment, Velez said.
