To the Editor:
We have 700,000 illegal immigrants brought here as children illegally by their parents. President Barack Obama unilaterally allowed them to stay under his program of Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA). This was a deliberate violation of our immigration laws and failure to faithfully execute the laws of the land as required by the Constitution. Obama should have been impeached. Trump rightfully ended this unconstitutional program and asked Congress to fix the situation by March 6.
This group of illegals is a mixed bag. Some are violent MS-13 gang members, some committed felonies, some taking welfare, some gainfully employed and some serving in the military. Our treatment of them should vary accordingly. They and/or their parents need to make restitution for illegal entry, consumption of benefits and taking jobs from citizens. We owe them nothing.
Illegal immigration violates the rule of law and is unfair to others. Giving them all amnesty and making them citizens without proper vetting and corrective measures would create a magnet for future illegal immigration, allow them to sponsor their illegal parents and fail to protect citizens from criminals.
First, we need to stop illegal immigration by securing the border with a barrier/wall, more enforcement officers, holding facilities, judges and tracking system. Since two-thirds of illegal immigrants got here by overstaying their visas, we also need to fully implement mandatory E-Verify for employers to follow.
In addition to enforcing immigration laws, we need to reform them by replacing the lottery system with a merit-based system such as other countries use. We need to end chain migration, anchor babies, benefits to illegals and sanctuary cities/states.
A reasonable approach is to give legal status and a path to citizenship for vetted Dreamers after the necessary immigration reforms, funding and enforcement are in place.
