JOLIET – A motorist was killed when a wheel hub flew free from a semitrailer and struck her as she was driving on Interstate 80 Tuesday afternoon.
A preliminary investigation by the Illinois State Police revealed that the semitrailer was traveling east on I-80 near Rowell Avenue when its wheel hub detached from the rear tractor axle, Trooper DeAnn Falat said in a news release.
The wheel hub then crossed over into westbound lanes and hit the windshield of a passenger car, striking the driver, the release said.
The driver was taken to an area hospital where she was later pronounced dead, the release said.
The state police are withholding the names of both drivers Tuesday. The driver's next of kin had yet to be notified, the release said.
The truck driver had not been charged with committing any crimes.
State police crash reconstruction officers and commercial motor vehicle officers investigated the deadly accident.
The state police asked witnesses to contact them at 815-726-6377, ext. 288.
