Area roundup: JJC's Gmazel, Butler earn all-rehion honors

JOLIET – Joliet Junior College’s Jarret Gmazel and Quincey Butler were named to the Region IV Division III All-Region Team for their accomplishments this season. Gmazel was named to the First Team, while Butler was named to the Second Team.

Gmazel, a sophomore from Lincoln-Way Central, was stellar for the 26-7 Wolves, who made the District II championship game before falling to Columbus State. He averaged 17.5 points a game and added 116 assists. Gmazel hit 114 3-pointers, second most in the country. He also was named the National Player of the Week in D-III. His buzzer beater in the Region IV Tournament semifinals against Milwaukee Area Technical was part of school history.

Butler, a sophomore, averaged 14.6 points and added 132 assists. He was 12th in the country with 72 steals and averaged 5.4 rebounds. He scored a team-high 29 points in the District II championship against Columbus State. He scored 20 or more points nine times this season.

COLLEGE SOFTBALL

Lewis wins pair: The Flyers rallied past St. Cloud State, 4-2, and edged Wayne State, 14-11, in nine innings. In the opener, Dara Sanders had two hits and allowed one earned run in a complete-game win. In the finale, Sarah Demasi had four hits, while Jessica Lofthouse (five RBIs), Cierra Taylor (two RBIs) and Emily Guske each had three hits. Sanders got the win in relief.
