Local school briefs: Lincoln-Way Central student wins full tuition scholarship

NEW LENOX — A Lincoln-Way Central student entered and won an essay contest which earned her full tuition at Central Michigan University.

Kayla Szymanski applied to Central Michigan after visiting the campus in the fall of 2017 and began looking for scholarship opportunities, according to a press release. She discovered the Centralis Scholarship Competition for CMU's prestigious Honors Scholar Program.

To apply, high school seniors must have a minimum 3.7 GPA, have scored a 27 on their ACT and have already been accepted into CMU.

The essay question asked her to write about two people of historical significance — dead or alive — whom she would invite to dinner. She decided to take a risk and chose herself at age 7 and at age 40, but it ended up paying off for her in the end in December when she got the letter of good news.

"I had kind of forgotten about it because I was unsure if I was going to be given that prestigious opportunity," Szymanski said. "But I opened it in the kitchen with my family and was just so excited."
