Residents may see smoke, flames during Crest Hill controlled burn

Dried vegetation burned near Rock Run Greenway Trail Tuesday

CREST HILL — Crest Hill residents or passersby might have noticed smoke and flames coming from a field near the Rock Run Greenway Trail Tuesday afternoon, but fire officials said a controlled burn was taking place.

What appeared to be a brush fire could be seen just before 2 p.m. Tuesday near the intersection of Theodore Street and Edgerton Drive and part of the Rock Run Greenway Trail in Crest Hill. Dried vegetation gave off an orange glow and smoke filled the air.

Plainfield Deputy Fire Chief Jon Stratton said a controlled burn was scheduled to take place Tuesday in the area.

The trail is part of the Will County Forest Preserve District.
