PLAINFIELD – The 37th annual Plainfield Fest will again be held in downtown Plainfield on Lockport and Des Plaines streets.

The event, which will take place July 20 to 22 and has continued to expand year after year, has almost been moved before – in 2018, several specifics, including entertainment, have shifted, according to a news release from the festival’s organizers.

“We’re not Downers Grove, we’re not Taste of Joliet, we’re not Naperville,” Trustee Cally Larson previously told The Herald-News. “We are a smaller community that is learning as we grow. As our festivals grow and get bigger, we’ll make changes as necessary.”

Nearly 3,000 attended the fest’s Saturday night activities in 2017. Last year’s plan was to have the fest in open areas along the riverfront after years on Lockport Street, but the location was altered back to the downtown. The one big change from previous years was that the carnival was held at Plainfield Central rather than Lockport Street.

This year, all music entertainment and the bags tournament will be held in the village parking lot, located adjacent to the Plainfield Township Community Center, 15014 S. Des Plaines St. The alley behind Wine & Cheese by TCC, 24104 W. Lockport St., and Vaughan Dance Academy, 24116 W. Lockport St., will also be used.

The Plainfield Riverfront Foundation has organized the event for the last eight years and worked to notify downtown residents of the changes in February. The Plainfield Village Board heard the nonprofit’s proposals during its March 19 meeting. Staff recommended the board approve the plan, which is similar to the festival’s 2017 layout.

While the group was formed to raise funds and public awareness to develop the Plainfield Riverfront, according to its website, the 2017 event cost the village more than $30,000 in police, public works and emergency management funds, a staff report stated.

Anyone with concerns is asked to contact Plainfield Fest Chairman Robert Epley via phone at 815-609-6120 or email at rob.epley@plainfieldriverfront.org.
