Emergency crews find 1 dead after responding to water rescue near Channahon

Crews responded to the Des Plaines River Monday morning

CHANNAHON – Emergency crews found one person dead Monday morning in the Des Plaines River between Channahon and Joliet.

Channahon fire crews and police responded about 10:38 a.m. Monday to a report of a water rescue in the Des Plaines River between Channahon and Joliet, according to a news release from the Channahon Fire Protection District.

When crews arrived, they determined there was one person dead in the water. The deceased was a male, according to the Will County Coroner’s Office. No other identifiers were provided.

The deceased was identified Monday, but the coroner’s office was withholding his name pending the notification of his next of kin. An autopsy was scheduled for Tuesday.

The MABAS Division 15 Incident Management Team remained on the scene Monday afternoon. A Will County Sheriff’s deputy and an ambulance could be seen in the industrial area near 23315 S. Youngs Road in Channahon, south of the Rock Run Rookery Preserve. Illinois State Police are investigating the incident, Sgt. Jacqueline Cepeda said.

“We do not expect any updates in the near future as this is an ongoing investigation, and an autopsy will most likely be performed to confirm the identity,” Cepeda said.
