Illinois State Police responded Saturday morning to a reported crash on southbound Interstate 55 near Arsenal Road in Channahon.

Police did not yet have any information about the crash about 11 a.m. Saturday, but Channahon resident Scott Fickling was headed south to a soccer game in Braidwood when he witnessed the crash about 10:55 a.m.

Fickling said traffic had been moving slowly prior to the crash, and a semi-trailer rearended a vehicle about 10 cars behind him "at a high rate of speed."

“That was the most traumatic accident I’ve ever seen,” Fickling said.

Other witnesses ran out to check on the semi's driver, after the truck slid onto its side on the median. One vehicle had been forced into northbound traffic, Fickling said.

He said at least two vehicles were involved, but he assumed there were more.

Traffic appeared to be affected in both directions on I-55. The left southbound lane was blocked because of the crash, the Illinois Department of Transportation said in a tweet at 11:57 a.m.
