Fire official: Arsonist damages vacant Joliet home

Will County officials auctioned house the same day

A fire that an unknown individual set damaged a vacant two-story home in the 500 block of Francis Street, a Joliet fire official said.

At 12:20 p.m. Wednesday, the Joliet Fire Department received a call about a fire, Joliet Deputy Fire Chief Greg Blaskey said. Firefighters responded and had the blaze under control by 12:31 p.m., he said.

"We are actively investigating it as an arson fire," Blaskey said.

No one was injured because the building was unoccupied, Blaskey said. No witnesses have come forward to say how the fire started, and investigators do not know what triggered it, he said.

Samples from the fire have been sent off to a lab to be studied. Fire investigators and police will follow up, Blaskey said.

Will County officials also auctioned the house Wednesday.
