Seventh-grade students at Lukancic Middle School in Romeoville were busy in September writing letters to those who serve the nation and the community.

It started with the social studies students writing letters to those serving abroad in the military, and then grew to English language arts students writing letters to police officers and firefighters in Romeoville.

One of the letters was written by Kealsey Haun to Romeoville Officer Gary Augustine, who was also Kealsey’s DARE instructor at R.C. Hill Elementary. Rather than write back with answers to Kealsey’s questions, Augustine paid a surprise visit to her and her fellow students in Kathleen Ydnekew’s and Kimberly Cotto’s classroom.

Kealsey had questions about law enforcement, but also had important questions about Augustine’s preference in football teams.
