Joliet police begin holiday driving enforcement

Joliet police will crack down on seat belt, speeding and drunk driving violations through Nov. 26 as part of a statewide holiday enforcement campaign.

The effort includes seat belt safety zones at various locations throughout the city, a roadside safety checkpoint and citywide saturation and speed enforcement.

Officers assigned to these details will check for occupant and child restraint violations, as well as DUI, speeding and other driving infractions.

Joliet Police Chief Al Roechner reminds drivers to not drink and drive.

“So many family tragedies can be easily avoided by wearing seat belts, having a designated driver, getting a ride or by calling for a taxi or ride-sharing service,” Roechner said.

The Thanksgiving holiday is one of the busiest travel times of the year, according to the Illinois Department of Transportation. More vehicles on the roadways means there is more potential for crashes and fatalities.

This campaign is funded through an IDOT grant.
