Letter: Democracy is the enemy?

To the Editor:

After reading a recent opinion by Mr. Larry Pottorff, I couldn’t help but reminisce about all the opinions I have had published claiming that the Republicans, especially Trump, are destroying our democracy and now Mr. Pottorff has said its destruction is necessary? Mr. Pottorff states in his Nov. 11 letter: ... “leftist liberal hypocrites pretend they are all knowing when they say Trump or any conservative is ruining our democracy. Duh...it’s what they’re supposed to be doing!” He also stated: “Democracy is an enemy of the Republic ...”

Really, Mr. Pottorff?

Webster’s Dictionary defines democracy as: “government by the people; rule of majority.” Another definition states: “a system of government by the whole population or all its eligible members of a state, typically through elected representatives.” Further, the opening words of our Constitution read: “We the People...”

It’s a growing concern among true Americans how Republican-sponsored voter suppression is growing rampant in our country. From fraudulent voting machines to the system known as “cross check,” to voter ID laws, to lack of adequate polling places in low-income areas. Republicans are working overtime trying to stop voters from exercising their right as Americans.

To date, less than one-tenth of 1 percent of all votes counted are considered fraudulent. Yet, Republicans say their voter suppression efforts are intended to stop voter fraud. Why would you attempt to stop what does not exist? Trump claimed millions of votes were fraudulent in the 2016 election. However, no proof was presented, and no fraudulent votes were found.

Republicans are working diligently to destroy our democracy and it’s up to true Americans to stop it. Hopefully, Mr. Pottorff, this publication offers you some clarification.

In 2020, it is crucial we continue to “Vote American, Not Republican.”
