Lockport blaze injures firefighter

Fire personnel from East Joliet, Frankfort, Homer, Lemont, Manhattan, Northwest Homer, Romeoville and Troy assisted in bringing the fire under control.

An overnight fire Monday at a commercial building in Lockport drew several emergency agencies and caused a firefighter to suffer a minor injury.

Lockport firefighters responded about 1:50 a.m. Monday to 1139 E. Ninth St. for a reported structure fire, Deputy Chief Frank Blaskey said in a news release. Lockport Animal Hospital used to occupy the building, but the facility is currently being used for its records storage only.

When crews arrived, they found heavy fire coming from the small building's attic. Downed power lines in the immediate area made it difficult to access all sides of the building, the release said.

Personnel remained on the scene for several hours, and one firefighter injured his hand. The fire's cause remained under investigation Monday.
