To the Editor:
Two of my favorite holiday decorations are a banner and a statue of Santa kneeling by a manger of the baby Jesus. It makes me believe even Santa knew “the reason for the season.”
With all of the ads for material items, whether for Black Friday or Cyber Monday or the rush to get the right gift for members of your family or friends, I hope everyone remembers why we have a celebration of Christmas.
The things I remember most when I was a child were the Christmas programs at church and school, the enjoyment of gatherings of grandparents, aunts, uncles, cousins and friends with my parents. Also, I reminisce about the wonderful holiday meals that my mother would prepare.
Of course, that one special present under the tree brought me joy, the one that was next to the manger. I still have my sled of more than 60 years, which I decorated and placed by my front door. That one present brought hours of enjoyment as I sledded down the hill in our back yard at the first sight of snowflakes hitting the ground.
Today, many children receive an abundance of toys and some may never see the inside of a church for a true Christmas program. Enjoy the holiday season, but please remember to keep the Christ in Christmas.
