Susan Czajowski directs Steve Manney on how to build the puzzle without either one of them being able to see what the puzzle. Success will only come when the directions are clearly communicated, and understood.

As part of Goal 1 and Strategy 2 of the Valley View School District 365U strategic plan, third-grade teachers at Hermansen Elementary School in Romeoville “test drove” an exercise designed to help students learn to communicate.

Being able to listen is not enough. Truly understanding what another person is saying, and being able to communicate understanding, or explaining the barrier to understanding is a key communication skill students need to acquire.

Under the direction of Hermansen LMC Director Matt Korwin, third grade teachers Steve Manney and Susan Czajowksi used “The Empathy Toy” to solve a puzzle.

This is a blindfolded puzzle game that can only be solved when players learn to understand each other.
