A former teacher pleaded not guilty to charges of possessing child pornography, including having one image showing a naked child bound, blindfolded and portrayed as being subjected to “sadomasochistic” abuse.
Kevin Macha, 28, of the 700 block of Raub Street, appeared at his arraignment Thursday in a suit with his attorney, Donald DeWilkins. DeWilkins told Will County Judge Dave Carlson that his client pleaded not guilty to three counts of child pornography possession.
One of the counts in the criminal complaint alleges that Macha possessed an image of a fully nude child “bound and blindfolded” and “portrayed or depicted as bound, fettered or subject to sadistic, masochistic or sadomasochistic abuse.”
Will County Sheriff’s deputies said Macha was using a social media platform to share child pornography. Sheriff’s spokeswoman Kathy Hoffmeyer said the platform was the website Tumblr, which banned adult content Dec. 17.
Macha was arrested and jailed
Dec. 4 after a Will County Sheriff’s Office investigation. He was held on $200,000 bond, and his father posted 10 percent of his bail two days later, leading to his release. Macha was a teacher at Reed-Custer School District 255 until he was suspended when district officials learned of the criminal investigation. The district board accepted his resignation Dec. 19. He also was the director of the Joliet American Legion Band.
Macha’s bond forbids him from having any contact with minors, possessing firearms and dangerous weapons or using the internet. DeWilkins asked Carlson if Macha’s bond could be modified for internet use because he’d like to apply for jobs. Carlson scheduled the issue for a hearing Tuesday.
