Commuters walk down the Metra platform on Saturday, Jan. 5, 2019, at the Joliet Metra Station in Joliet, Ill. Recent train delays have caused headaches for commuters and drawn the attention of a local congressman.

A freight train derailment between Lemont and Willow Springs caused Metra to cancel all morning and evening service on the Heritage Corridor line Monday.

Metra tweeted an initial alert just after 3 a.m.

Metra officials announced at 10:41 a.m. that Heritage Corridor trains also would not operate Monday night, and more information would be given about Tuesday's service at a later time.

Commuters were encouraged to use Rock Island Joliet, BNSF and Southwest Service trains as alternatives.

The Rock Island line was also delayed Monday morning due to mechanical problems. Freight trains were having to use the line, as well, because of the derailment.

This is a developing story; check back with The Herald-News for updates.
