Why Fernandes was selected: The Lockport senior wrestler was one of three champions and six finalists for the Porters at Stagg's Tom Lahey Invite. He has only been beaten once this season by a competitor from Illinois.
Herald-News sports writer Curt Herron talked with Fernandes.
Herron: What do you like the most about wrestling?
Fernandes: I like how it's an individual sport and you can make it as hard or easy to want it to be and you can challenge yourself and set your own goals.
Herron: What do you like most about this year's team?
Fernandes: Our team feels like family and I like that family bond.
Herron: What do you like most about competing for Lockport?
Fernandes: I like the coaches and how they treat their athletes and how we're always working hard.
Herron: What would you like to do in the future?
Fernandes: I haven't figured that out yet, but I am planning to go to school for business at the University of Minnesota.
Herron: Who's your favorite athlete?
Fernandes: I always looked up to my cousin, Taylor Martinez, who was the quarterback at the University of Nebraska. He's always inspired me.
Herron: Do you have any pets?
Fernandes: I have a Bulldog named Midas.
Herron: What's your favorite type of music?
Fernandes: I like Hip hop and Rap.
Herron: Who's someone that you would like to meet?
Fernandes: Lil Wayne.
Herron: What's your favorite type of food and restaurant?
Fernandes: I love tacos. There's a taco truck in Joliet that I love.
Herron: What's your favorite movie?
Fernandes: I like Step Brothers a lot.
Herron: What do like to do in your free time?
Fernandes: I like sleeping a lot and relaxing.
Herron: Where's the most interesting place you've been and where would you like to visit?
Fernandes: I thought Aruba was pretty interesting. I've always wanted to visit South Africa.
