The Plainfield Park District will hold an open house Feb. 2 for its new Prairie Activity & Recreation Center.
The PARC opened this year and offers residents a new place for fitness, activities and sports, according to a news release.
The event will include tours of the facility, family-friendly activities and free giveaways.
PARC’s building is a new, 40,000-square-foot facility including a 4,000-square-foot fitness center, elevated indoor track and a full-size basketball court that includes striping for two volleyball and pickleball courts. The facility also is the new home for the park district’s Great Adventures Preschool program and includes a 1,600-square-foot multipurpose room.
Residents approved construction of the facility in a 2016 referendum. The district broke ground in October 2017.
The district was able to pay for the construction through a $1 million grant from the Clean Energy Foundation for PARC’s Net-Zero design, which includes the latest energy-efficient building materials and a 213-kilowatt rooftop solar panel system that will offset its energy use.
Plainfield Park District Executive Director Carlo Capalbo noted in the release that the PARC is the first park district building in the state of Illinois to receive the Net-Zero designation.
“We’re really excited for our residents to come see PARC and look forward to bringing more programming options to the community there,” Capalbo said in the release.
He added that for a district of this size, the PARC has been a long overdue amenity for its residents.
The open house will take place from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the PARC, 24550 W. Renwick Road in Plainfield.
