Tri-State Cut Stone and Brick in Frankfort recently hosted a regional bricklaying competition, one of 24 held across North America.
The qualifying national competitors, including mason Marty Marrs and mason tender Tony Savant of Marrs Masonry in Terre Haute, Indiana, would next battle for a chance to win over $125,000 in cash and prizes, according to a news release.
The Spec Mix Bricklayer 500 World Championship was in Las Vegas and included a Ford F250 XLT 4X4 truck and John Deere Gator as prizes.
This year’s regional event drew 11 teams of highly skilled bricklayers. Marrs and Savant celebrated with a brick count of 587, the release said. They received a Marshalltown tool bag, Stabila Level, $500, the trip to Las Vegas and the title “Illinois’ Best Bricklayer.”
Marrs and Savant also took home the title of Spec Mix Top Craftsman, which came with a $500 reward.
Masonry students from the District Council Training Center were in attendance to help the Spec Mix team run the event and to gain experience in working with some of the regions’ most skilled laborers. Two students were chosen to build their own wall to compare their skills against the professionals.
